Karen and her sister Tracie are taking on the Forth Crossing to raise funds for McMillan Cancer Research, read their story here.
I am doing the Firth of Forth Swim with my sister Tracie. She wanted to do it to celebrate turning 50 this year and needed someone to do it with her, so we signed up in Feb. We both used to swim competitively until I was about 18 then I stopped. Tracie carried on did masters until 2012 and now is a Triathlon Swimming coach in her evenings. I was starting from scratch with my swimming - 34 yrs of doing heads up breaststroke in a flowery costume.
Anyway my sister sent me sessions (we don't live near enough to train together regularly) and I got back in the pool in Feb and started building up my distance. Now up to doing 3000m sessions in the pool 2 to 3 times a week on my own and also just joined a master swim group to work on my pace and not be so Billy no mates when training. We did our first open water event together in July the Deeside mile 2k River swim and then I really got the bug!
Since then I have done the Big Brutal 2.5k swim in Llyn Padarn and the Severn Mile 1.5k Swim.
We have a few more events planned before the big one over the coming weeks including a night swim - eek! .
I decided I would swim for Macmillan Cancer support as the do amazing work and need our support, we all know someone who they have helped.
Finally I couldn't begin to even think about doing this without my amazing sister Tracie's support and can't wait to be getting out of the Forth hand in hand with her.
Tuesdays & Thursdays at Darnley Dams from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Please note there will be no swim session on Sunday.
