Discovering Open Water Swimming - One Swimmers Story.
December 23, 2016
In previous Blogs we have asked swimmers for 'their stories', this week's story comes from Caroline Connor.
The ‘highlight’ of 2016 for me was discovering the absolute thrill of discovering Open Water Swimming!
My first event was the Great Swim at Loch Lomond – I had seen it popping through on our emails for months as my Husband, Grahame, has run many half marathons but the swim side of it was always something I thought was for the ‘pro swimmers’ not someone like me.
Grahame’s persistant encouragment for me to ‘give it a try’ was enough for me it think ,’ok, lets do it’ but if I was going to do it I wanted to try the 2 mile swim not just the 1 mile. I did it, was 2nd lady to finish in less than 55 mins and came out thinking ‘ I want to do it again’!
That night I discovered ’Vigour’ and swiftly entered the 5km at Loch Ard the following week and the Forth crossing not long after. I was the 1st lady to finish Loch Ard in 1hr 22mins and came 5th at the Forth crossing in 30 mins, I have never been so happy (except for when I got married to Grahame of course!)
The exhilaration of taking part in these events was so powerful that I was gutted when the season was effectively over for the year.
I have done 3 winter swim sessions at Pilmuir Quarry and even managed to get Grahame into a wet suit and try it out too!
Due to family commitments we have missed the last couple of weeks but we will be there raring to go on 8th January.
Last week we decided that I would take on the biggest challenge of my life, swimming the length of Loch Lomond in July 2017 with Robert & Kirstin’s full support and back up. Even though Grahame will be watching from the sidelines I know how grateful I will be to him for knowing that I have his100% support from now until I finish the swim. I am looking forward to Robert sharing his knowledge, expertise and accepting all the advice he can possibly give to me in order to make sure I complete the swim.
I was recently awarded a ‘Diabetes UK Care in Schools’ award for my work with the kids at Peebles High School where I work as an admin assistant/first aider. The kids have a lot to deal with as type 1 diabetes can impact of the daily parts of life that we take for granted and that’s why I decided that I would raise money for Diabetes Scotland by completing this mammoth task of Loch Lomond – all 36km of it ! As many of my friends have already told me – ‘you are completely mad’ maybe so, but the smile on Grahame’s face at the end of it will make it all worthwhile and I can’t wait ! Total Immersion Workshop
If you can swim continuously for 50 metres or more and would like to work on increased efficiency and speed then our One Day Fishlike Freestyle Workshops will set you on the path to achieving these goals. They are held in various locations throughout the UK and are the first choice not only for experienced triathletes and open water swimmers but also for those who are preparing for their first experience of the sport or who want to swim for fitness and fun.
Our next workshops will be the 14th January & 18th March 2017.
