No doubt you will have noticed Vigour Events offer Total Immersion sessions. This technique focuses on the fundamentals of swimming to become that streamlined water creature. As a world-renowned coaching programme created by Terry Laughlin, it was used to overcome his difficulties in the water alongside developing a long history of improving the swimming stroke.
Whether you are a complete novice or an accomplished triathlete in the water, all sessions begin with the same training techniques to make each individual’s stroke more fluid and efficient. It drives individuals to achieve their personal goals and improve their understanding of swimming in the open water, allowing them to achieve injury free exercise.
A perfect training tool to help with your TI training sessions is the new Finis tempo Trainer Pro. It is similar to the old model in design however the predominant flaws have been repaired. If you drop it whilst swimming, it is no longer lost forever - it floats! The batteries are replaceable (so you don’t need to buy a whole new tempo trainer – genius.) This nifty little thing can fit inside your swim cap.
The tempo trainer has three different display modes to help develop your swimming:
Mode 1: second/stroke display. Monitor your progress and search for the correct tempo using the tempo trainer.
Mode 2: Triple beep from 1 second to 9:59. This mode offers versatility to the trainer and allows you to set different times. For example your coach could ask you to swim 100, ten times at 1:50. If you finish your 100 at 1:30 you have 20 seconds to rest and would go on to the next triple beep. No more watching the clock or doing math to see when its time to go again.
Mode 3: strides/minute or cycles/minute. You can set your stride in mode 3, go for a run and hit your perfect cadence. Clip it to your waistband and check your cadence during different points of your run or attach it to your bike and select cycles/minute. What’s not to love?
The tempo trainer has a synch button, hit this anytime you want to restart the mode. If you are using mode 2 and want to start your next interval early (or late), hit the synch button when you are ready to go and it starts a new set. This is really handy for helping the coach synch a tempo trainer to the swimmer as they swim their natural pace. If you are looking to invest in a device to improve your swimming, then this is your best bet.
