Your heart is fluttering with anticipation. You are standing by the side of a plummeting loch with icy apprehension. Your swim cap and goggles are on. Hold that thought. Your wetsuit feels a bit loose or worse, it is slightly restricting. How can you concentrate on the race at hand if all you can focus on is the fit of your wetsuit?
If you plan on racing in any triathlon or open water swimming events this summer, it is best to prepare your attire for the big day. No doubt you will be training once or twice a week in the open water and are tired of hiring out a wetsuit. Take the plunge and acquire your own. You want to feel comfortable and confident at any events to ensure your swimming success.
Wetsuits provide warmth to your body in colder water temperatures. Be wary, you must purchase a wetsuit that is suited to swimming rather than outdoor water sports. These wetsuits are heavy and are only to maintain core body temperature. Where as a swimming wetsuit is a neoprene-rubber blend that is coated with a slick material that is ‘hydrophobic’. The exterior is ‘water-fearing’ and repels it, which in turn will improve your performance.
To top of its water-repelling abilities, a good wetsuit will allow full range of motion in the shoulders, chest and legs whilst providing maximum buoyancy in the water. The buoyancy that the wetsuit provides allows you to keep yourself afloat. Fill yourself with confidence, especially if you have a fear of drowning, as your wetsuit will keep you on top like a buoy in the water.
We all have that competitive streak inside us, some more than others and no doubt, you will want the best wetsuit that will suit you. A wetsuit will add an element of speed to your swim due its reduction of drag. This will only occur if the wetsuit is a perfect fit.
The Perfect Wetsuit
It should be snug but too tight that it will cut off circulation
There should be no folds or excess material (this will drag you down and make your swim more difficult).
Consider the fit of the neckline. When you are swimming you don’t want to feel like you are being suffocated.
Ensure that the arm and leg holes are equally snug so they do not act as scoops to pull in water.
At Vigour Events we allow our swimmers to try before they buy by hiring out our wetsuits before purchasing. If you need any further advice please give us a call on 0333 5777946.
