2 years ago Joe dipped his toe in the water as preparation for the Blenheim Tri, his very first triathlon.
His first session thereafter was at Bardowie Loch as preparation! Panic kicked in at 100 metres.
In 2014 Joe completed Vigour Events Bardowie Loch 1k, Luss 1k and Loch Ard 1k swims.
Joes challenge for 2015 is Ironman Austria taking place on 28/6/2015. Training sessions include 2 cycles (24 miles with 2300 feet of climbing, 40 miles with 2250 ft of climbing), an 80 minute run and 1 brick session ( 45 minutes on bike then 15 minute run!).
Joe has been training hard, his training ranges from homemade-1500 m swim, 40 km cycle then 10 k run!
Joe has signed up for the 1k Bardowie Loch swim in May and the 3k in June through Vigour Events.
Joe has been trying to get into the pool at least twice to three times per week in preparation and attended a Total Immersion session in December and feels that this has definitely helped him to relax and feel more comfortable with his breathing and balance.
Joe has also been working on his breathing technique whilst swimming and every 100m practicing different breathing sequences- breathing every 2,3,4 and even 5 strokes up to a distance of 1025 m. ..
He has just swam an endurance swim with his fellow wannabe ironman, John Clark. Swimming 3.8K, ironman distance, in a leisurely 90 minutes.
Joes biggest issue was feeling hungry after 1 hr. Toast n jam and a bag of salt n vinegar Mccoys is not the diet of Michael phelps......he said.
This is the 3rd time he has swam at least 3.8 k, the furthest being 4.25 k 2 weeks ago.
This weeks report from Joe:
Quiet week this week. Tired! Training catching up on my 52 yr old brain! Cycling and running this week. Disaster at pool tonight as got ready to get in pool and forgot goggles, not even spare pair with me so need to do double tomorrow night.
Keep meaning to keep a spare kit in the car. Lesson learned. Now grumpy.
Hope to get to Bardowie this Sunday for first open water swim of the year. Need to get back in the open water ASAP.
What is next? An Open water Swim (but water is still so cold) and Loch Lubnaig is still in his sights.....
